Posadas are a beloved tradition here in Honduras that help prepare our hearts for Jesus during Advent. Over the nine days leading up to Christmas—symbolizing the nine months of pregnancy—we walk alongside Mary and Joseph as they seek an inn. Through singing, prayer, and reflection, they are turned away twice, until the third home opens its doors. There, we gather to pray, play a game, and share a snack together. When I think of Advent, I often imagine silence—a quiet preparation for our Savior. That silence is hard to come by here, with eighteen kids between the ages of two and seventeen running around at all times. Yet the noise and chaos are something I am learning to bring into my prayer, rather than allowing them to leave me frustrated. Cati arrived at the Finca at just three years old and left at eighteen. When it was time for her to transition out, she had not yet completed high school, so she attended a boarding school in San Pedro Sula for her final three years. Earlier this month, our missionary community had the joy of traveling to stand by her side as she received her diploma. Y celebrated her 15th birthday! It was a crazy couple of months planning the invitations, dances, decorations, etc., but it was all worth it, being able to watch her shine on her special day. At one point in the night, we watched a slide show of her life. Former missionaries sent in pictures they had of her, and she’s been here since she was 2 so they added up! She sat on the floor in her big puffy dres,s watching the screen, and Theresa and I snuggled up with her. It was quite an emotional moment for her and it made me reflect on what an honor it is to be able to be part of these kids’ lives. I could have sat with her, sharing the stories the pictures prompted all night. She is truly stunning inside and out. They do an incredible job including the children in all events and making it a meditative, prayerful experience. On Holy Thursday, we had the typical washing of the feet and then a Communion Service. We then had a Holy Hour, and near the end of the Holy Hour, Teddy, playing Jesus, approached Jesus on the altar and remained in this prayerful position for a while. It was then that Denis and Luis, playing two of the soldiers, came forward and took him away. I was touched by how reverent our young boys were. I never thought I would be teaching down here as I perceived my hands being full with nursing and all. But, here I am. The day prior to being asked to teach, I had just been telling Theresa how glad I was to not be teaching. Our Lord is quite funny. However, I am only teaching English one day a week. I am also not teaching in the Finca - there is a Catholic School in Trujillo called “San Juan Bautista” that has a goal of becoming a bilingual school. They don’t quite have enough English speaking teachers to qualify as a bilingual school. So Nate and I are partnering with 2 other missionaries from a different mission in Trujillo, Paul and Hilda, to split up the week and each teach 1 day. On February 3rd, we celebrated Our Lady of Suyapa, named the patroness of Honduras after a Marian apparition in 1747. Mother Mary appeared to a local peasant named Alejandro Colindres. He was on his way back to Suyapa after a long day of gathering corn when it became dark so he decided to lay down and sleep for the night. When he put his head down he felt something similar to a stone under his head so he threw the stone but when he laid his head back down to sleep, the object had returned. It being night, he couldn’t see what it was so he placed it in his bag. In the morning, he saw it was not a stone but rather a carved image of our lady. I love the story Our Lady of Suyapa because it is a good reminder of the persevering love of the Father that Our Mother demonstrates as well. Mother Mary has been such a safe place for me while I’ve been on mission and I know she is holding my hand every step of the way. It was similar to the posadas we did for Christmas but simpler. Four people processed with Our Lady and the rest followed behind singing or praying the rosary. Every day we ended at a different house where we sang and prayed more and then shared a small dessert or snack. We had some cake and coffee to really embrace the Christmas season. It is a great joy to be able to get to know each and every one of them. Doña Josefina (red shirt and pink skirt), I am particularly close with and she is such a motherly prescence here. I have also learned a lot from the way she holds herself with openness and joy. The Lord continues to amaze me every day. Every morning I walk out my front door into a view of this beautiful ocean and I cannot believe where He has placed me. I am not sure when it will all feel real but for now, I am awaiting the awakening of this fever dream. This week we have begun orientation and there is information overload! The first thing was learning all the kids’ names and nearly 4o people on staff which I am still working on. Here is the outside of our missionary house where I enjoy swingin’, chattin’, readin’, sippin’, prayin’, or really anything as you can’t beat the view pictured above. This week the kids don’t have school because of a holiday here in Honduras called “Semana Morazanica” so we have had a lot of time to play when we’re not in orientation activities. So far this week my favorite moment was a beach day with all the kiddos. Amidst tossing kids into the waves, being jumped on, and uncontrollably laughing, I had a moment of disbelief that this sweet joy is my job and life for the next 2 years. Every soul here loves so incredibly well that it’s as if you can hear the Lord’s heart beating in moments of silence within these gates. Within orientation, Nate (the director of missionaries who has been here for 3 years) continuously reminds us to love the person in front of us.
